What does ACHS International accreditation mean?
Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHS International) assesses healthcare services through its EQuIP programmes. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the nonprofit Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, known as ACHS.
Who runs it and is it the government?
ACHS International runs these assessments as a healthcare accreditation organisation. An Australian name on a certificate does not make it an Australian government operating licence for a hospital abroad.
Its programmes cover hospitals, ambulatory care, oral health and other defined services. Ask which programme applies to the treatment setting you will use. A general reference to EQuIP gives less information than the full programme and achievement level.
Organisation-level recognition from the ISQua External Evaluation Association sits under the ACHS parent for January 2026 to January 2030. Keep the parent's name attached to that recognition rather than describing it as a separate subsidiary award. IEEA's awards directory allows you to check the recipient.
What does it assess and for how long?
EQuIP standards address clinical care, organisation-wide safety and improvement. Assessment can involve an in-depth visit announced in advance with annual follow-up, or annual short-notice assessment.
EQuIP7 accreditation has a three-year cycle. Check the certificate dates and ask which assessment arrangement the organisation follows. Annual contact with the evaluator and the full accreditation period describe different parts of the process.
Foundation, Recognition and full Accreditation are different achievements. If a clinic uses one of the earlier terms, ask it to explain that status directly. Do not silently replace it with “accredited” when comparing providers. The programme overview sets out the accreditation offering.
How do I find a clinic in its register?
Use ACHS International's global organisation network to search by member name or location. A network entry can include an organisation working towards accreditation, so obtain its exact achievement level and certificate dates from ACHS International.
If the member results do not display, request confirmation of the particular organisation and award. Membership alone does not answer whether assessment has been completed.
What does it not tell me?
A network listing does not establish full accreditation, and a parent's external recognition does not establish your clinic's status. Keep those questions separate when asking for evidence.
