What does JCI accreditation tell me about a clinic?

Joint Commission International (JCI) assesses healthcare organisations against quality and patient-safety standards. It belongs to the independent, nonprofit Joint Commission enterprise in the United States.

Who runs it and is it the government?

JCI is an external evaluator, not a US government licensing authority. Its programmes cover hospitals, academic centres, ambulatory care and other defined services. A JCI award therefore tells you about an organisation's assessment under a particular programme. It does not mean the US government has licensed that organisation to practise medicine abroad.

JCI also holds organisation-level recognition from the ISQua External Evaluation Association, covering June 2023 to June 2027. That is recognition of the evaluator. It is separate from the award held by the hospital you are considering. IEEA's awards directory distinguishes these recipients and categories.

What does it assess and for how long?

An external survey examines the organisation against the standards for its programme, including quality and patient safety. Consulting does not determine the accreditation decision. If a clinic mentions help preparing for assessment, ask whether it has actually received an award.

Check the issue and expiry dates on the hospital's certificate. Use the dates for that programme rather than assuming that every JCI award lasts the same length of time. Ask JCI to clarify an undated certificate or a claim that does not identify its programme.

How do I find a clinic in its register?

Open JCI's directory of accredited international organisations. Find the organisation and compare its legal name, city, location and programme with the hospital's claim. Read the programme attached to the entry, not just the familiar hospital name.

If the directory's results do not load, send JCI the hospital's name and certificate details and request confirmation. A loading screen gives you no answer about accreditation status.

What does it not tell me?

JCI accreditation does not guarantee your treatment result or approve every treatment a hospital advertises. You still need to check the treating doctor's local registration and the particular service you plan to use.

Follow How to check any mark in five minutes before relying on the claim.
