What does RTAC certification mean for a fertility unit?

The Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) provides codes for assessing assisted reproductive technology units. RTAC belongs to the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand, while approved certifying bodies carry out the audits.

Who runs it and is it the government?

RTAC is part of a professional society, not a government licensing authority. The audit comes from an independent certifying body approved through JAS-ANZ. Ask which certifying body issued the unit's certificate so you know whom to contact about its validity.

The international code is distinct from the code for Australia and New Zealand. A fertility unit abroad should identify which code applies to its certificate. An Australian or New Zealand connection in the clinic's publicity does not answer that question.

What does it assess and for how long?

The assessment examines an ART unit against the applicable RTAC code through an independent audit. The international code was updated in 2023, replacing the 2018 version. RTAC's codes-of-practice page distinguishes the code documents.

Check the unit's certificate and current scheme rules for its term. Do not borrow an assumed duration from the domestic code or from a different unit. If the certificate refers to an older edition, ask the certifying body how the applicable requirements and current status relate to that document.

How do I find a clinic in its register?

Open RTAC's accredited-units directory. Search by company, address, suburb, postcode, radius, RTAC number or medical director. Match the unit and its code, rather than treating the medical director's name alone as the award recipient.

The directory states that its information is current to 1 June 2026. Treat that as the list's stated update date, not as a real-time assurance. Ask the certifying body or scheme operator about any later renewal, expiry or change relevant to your booking.

If the clinic gives you a group name, request the particular unit's RTAC number. That can help resolve which record corresponds to the place providing your treatment.

What does it not tell me?

Neither the international nor the Australia/New Zealand code predicts an individual treatment outcome. Certification of the unit also should not be described as the treating doctor's personal licence.
