How do I check a doctor in Colombia?
Colombia's Ministry of Health maintains ReTHUS, the national register of healthcare professionals, with registration functions also carried out by delegated professional bodies. Patients can use its public consultation route to check professional authorisation and specified ethical-disciplinary sanctions.
How do I look up a doctor?
Ask the practitioner for the identity and document details needed to distinguish their record. Open the Ministry of Health's ReTHUS page, select “Consulta al ciudadano” and follow the official SISPRO link. Enter the identity details requested by that form.
The Spanish-language service concerns compliance with requirements for the health profession. Match the person and profession carefully. If a result is unclear, ask the responsible registration body to explain the authorisation rather than relying on a clinic biography.
How do I check a specialist or a dentist?
Dentists also use ReTHUS. Check the basic professional record first, then ask for the exact registered postgraduate qualification supporting a specialist claim.
Postgraduate qualifications can be recorded, but do not assume every title will be visible in every public result. Ask the responsible registration body to confirm a missing or ambiguous qualification. The dental college's registration instructions provide additional guidance for dental professional documentation.
An advertised service such as implantology or bariatric surgery does not itself establish a separately recognised specialty. Ask for the qualification's exact title and local registration, rather than accepting the procedure name as the credential.
Does the register show disciplinary action?
The ministry expressly describes ethical-disciplinary sanction information for medicine and dentistry within ReTHUS. Read any listed sanction in its stated scope and ask the responsible body about an unclear restriction.
The register is not a complete account of complaints, litigation or clinical outcomes. A result without a displayed sanction therefore should not be described as proof that no complaint or dispute has ever existed.
What about doctors trained abroad?
Foreign degrees require recognition by the Ministry of Education and the applicable ReTHUS registration. Foreign postgraduate qualifications also need Colombian recognition before registration. Ask for the local registration evidence alongside the overseas diploma so you can check the claimed profession and specialty separately.
What do US, Canadian or UK titles mean here?
A foreign board certificate or Fellowship does not replace Colombian authorisation; the foreign-credentials guide explains how to verify those additional claims.
