How do I check a doctor in India?
India's State Medical Councils and National Medical Commission (NMC) administer medical registration under the applicable framework. Patients can search the NMC's consolidated register, then confirm current standing with the state council when a record is missing or outdated.
How do I look up a doctor?
Open the NMC's Indian Medical Register. Search by name, qualification, registration year, registration number or registered council. Ask the doctor for the number and state council so you can distinguish the correct record.
The English-language database says it is being updated. A missing or stale consolidated entry is therefore not conclusive. Ask the relevant State Medical Council to confirm current registration and the details that matter to your planned care.
How do I check a specialist or a dentist?
For a medical specialist, use the qualification filter and compare the recognised postgraduate or additional qualification with the state registration. Ask the council to confirm a missing qualification. The search should not be described as a uniformly current “board-certified” directory of every subspecialty.
Dentists are registered through State Dental Councils, with national oversight by the National Dental Commission (NDC). NDC replaced the Dental Council of India on 19 March 2026. The older DCI domain remains in use, so its address does not identify the current regulator. The government's NDC announcement explains the transition.
Use the Indian Dentists Register with the dentist's name, registration number and state, then confirm details with the state council. Ask separately about recognised dental postgraduate qualifications.
Does the register show disciplinary action?
Ask the relevant state council about current restrictions and available disciplinary information. A consolidated qualification entry is not a complete disciplinary history. For dentists, request clarification if the public record does not explain specialty or sanction information.
What about doctors trained abroad?
Foreign medical qualifications follow NMC recognition and registration rules that differ by qualification and cohort. Foreign postgraduate titles have applicable equivalence provisions. NMC's foreign-qualification information provides the official route.
Foreign dental qualifications require applicable recognition or screening and state registration. Ask NDC about current transition requirements. A course certificate or foreign society membership is not automatically a recognised Indian postgraduate qualification.
What do US, Canadian or UK titles mean here?
Foreign titles do not replace Indian recognition and registration; use the foreign-credentials guide to check those additional claims.
