How do I check a doctor in Spain?
Doctors in Spain need a recognised qualification, registration with the relevant medical college and no suspension or disqualification from practice. Patients can use the Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Médicos (CGCOM) public lookup and the appropriate provincial college.
How do I look up a doctor?
Ask for the doctor's legal name and national nine-digit college number. Open CGCOM's public register of doctors and search using the available identity fields. The central register concerns registered doctors authorised to practise.
If the national service does not load or the result needs explanation, use the relevant provincial college. Check that the name and registration number agree. CGCOM's explanation of the national college number helps identify the number you should request.
How do I check a specialist or a dentist?
Medical college registration and recognition of a specialist title are separate questions. Use a provincial college's specialty filter alongside the name or number. For example, León's medical-college search provides a specialty route. Ask the college to confirm a title that is missing or unclear.
For a dentist, use Guía Dentistas or the linked provincial dental college, searching by identity and location. Check the professional's registration separately from any advertised dental specialty.
A master's degree does not by itself establish a state-recognised dental specialty. A February 2026 dental-council notice described proposed specialties awaiting a ministry decision. Ask the council for the current legal position before interpreting a specialist claim.
Does the register show disciplinary action?
Ask the relevant college what current restrictions and disciplinary decisions it can confirm. A public registration entry should not be treated as a complete history of disciplinary judgments. Clarify any restriction in the record before relying on the doctor's advertised status.
What about doctors trained abroad?
Foreign qualifications need the applicable recognition or homologation, followed by college registration and other practice requirements. Foreign non-EU medical specialist titles have a dedicated recognition process. The Ministry of Health's non-EU specialist guidance explains that separate route. Foreign-trained dentists also need the applicable recognition and registration.
What do US, Canadian or UK titles mean here?
Foreign board certification or Fellowship does not replace Spanish professional requirements; use the foreign-credentials guide to verify those additional titles.
