Travelling to Panama for treatment

How do I get there?

For international arrivals to Panama City, consult Tocumen International Airport. Ask your clinic to confirm its treatment address and arrival arrangements before booking; the city also has other airports, so an airport name matters.

Do I need a visa?

The Embassy of Panama's visa information distinguishes the stay allowed to these ordinary-passport visitors:

Carry the passport, onward-travel and financial evidence required by the embassy. Rules for arrival on a private vessel differ. For a journey specifically for treatment or a longer stay, ask Panama's consulate which category applies and whether medical documentation is needed. Do not rely on leaving briefly and returning to reset permission.

Before departure, read Canada's travel advice for Panama, US travel advice for Panama, UK travel advice for Panama and the European Commission's gateway to EU national travel advice.

How do clinics usually take payment?

Auragens says payment is due before service and that it offers financing options. Ask it to specify the currency, accepted method, whether a deposit differs from full prepayment, and what happens if treatment changes after assessment.

Obtain a written estimate separating treatment, investigations, medicines and any other services. Ask whether tax is included and when refunds are processed. A provider's statement about insurance does not establish what your own policy will cover.

What language and documents do I need?

Auragens publishes English patient information. Confirm who will discuss the clinical plan in English and provide the treatment report, product or device details and follow-up contact information.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises patients to bring relevant medical records, test results, prescriptions and a medication list, and to tell the receiving team about allergies. It also advises obtaining complete records before returning home and arranging any necessary English translation.

Ask for a medical or dental report, an itemised invoice, prescriptions and a follow-up contact. If an implant or other device is used, request its identifying details and the operative record so your clinician at home knows what was placed.

Who can I complain to?

Contact Panama's Ministry of Health for the authority responsible for a clinic's licensing and health-service complaint. Its national health profile identifies the state's 311 complaint channel. Ask which regional office and form apply, whether you can submit from overseas and whether Spanish translation is required; do not assume a general enquiry decides compensation.

How long do people stay?

Auragens describes a typical five-day protocol, Monday to Friday, with the final duration determined for the patient. This is the provider's published attendance schedule, not proof that the treatment works or that every patient can fly at its end.

The CDC's medical-travel guidance says flying after surgery can increase clot risk and discusses delaying air travel 10–14 days after major surgery, especially chest procedures. This is general official guidance; ask the treating team and airline about your own return journey.

What should I know about the place?

Panama’s Ministry of Commerce and Industries describes efforts to develop medical travel around private hospitals and clinics, supported by the country’s international air connections. Its sector-development statement does not demonstrate the effectiveness of a particular therapy.
