What does Colombia's national health accreditation mean?
Colombia's Sistema Único de Acreditación en Salud is a voluntary healthcare-quality accreditation system. ICONTEC operates it as a private standards and accreditation body authorised through the Ministry of Health's accreditor-registration arrangements.
Who runs it and is it the government?
ICONTEC performs the accreditation role within the national framework. Its status as an authorised operator does not make the award identical to the government's mandatory permission for a service to operate.
Eligible healthcare organisations can seek accreditation against standards above mandatory habilitation requirements. When a hospital says it is “registered”, ask whether it means service registration or an actual accreditation award. Those statements concern different checks.
ICONTEC has organisation-level IEEA recognition for 2026–2030. That external recognition concerns ICONTEC and should be kept separate from an individual hospital's award period. IEEA's awards directory identifies the evaluator's recognition.
What does it assess and for how long?
The programme examines clinical and organisational improvement through self-assessment and external evaluation. Accreditation lasts four years and includes two follow-up evaluation visits. The follow-up visits form part of the cycle rather than separate proof that a new four-year term has begun. The accreditation process and cycle sets out these stages.
Ask the institution for its current decision and covered services. If it describes quality-improvement work or preparation for assessment, clarify whether ICONTEC has already issued an accreditation decision. Participation and an awarded status are different stages.
How do I find a clinic in its register?
Open the directory of accredited institutions. Browse the institution pages or search for the legal name. Compare the named institution and location, then confirm the current decision and scope.
If the clinic uses a shorter brand name, ask it for the legal name under which it is listed. Read the institution's own entry rather than relying on a logo copied into advertising. The programme reserves its accreditation logo for accredited institutions.
What does it not tell me?
Accreditation does not replace REPS registration or habilitation. It also does not establish the treating professional's registration. Check those requirements separately, using the Colombia doctor-check page for the professional enquiry.
Use How to check any mark in five minutes for the common certificate checks.
