What does habilitation mean for a Dominican Republic clinic?

Habilitación is the Dominican Republic's authorisation process for health establishments and services. The Ministry of Public Health administers it through the Dirección de Habilitación de Servicios y Establecimientos de Salud, known as DHSES.

Who runs it and is it the government?

DHSES is part of the government health ministry. Its work concerns the minimum requirements a health establishment must meet to operate. This is a regulatory permission, so ask the clinic for the habilitation covering its actual services.

A reference to ministry permission should identify the establishment, not merely the doctor's name or a business arranging your travel. If a clinic also advertises independent accreditation, ask for that separate certificate and its issuer. Habilitation should retain its own meaning in the comparison.

What does it assess and for how long?

The process includes an application, documentation and inspection requirements. It covers minimum infrastructure, staffing and service requirements. DHSES's inspection guidance gives the official route to the inspection framework.

A renewal service exists, but the relevant dates need to come from the clinic's permission and DHSES. Ask when the current authorisation expires and which services it enables. Do not assume that an older approval covers a newly advertised treatment without checking the permitted service.

If the clinic provides an application receipt rather than an authorisation, ask DHSES to confirm the resulting status. An application describes a request, while your enquiry concerns permission to operate now.

How do I find a clinic in its register?

Use the official Establecimientos Habilitados or consultation route through DHSES. Search for the establishment and compare its legal name, address and enabled services. The ministry's announcement of the online consultation service identifies the official verification route.

If the name is unclear or no readable record appears, ask DHSES to confirm the establishment directly. Give it the legal name and any habilitation number the clinic supplies. Request an answer about the particular services involved in your planned care.

What does it not tell me?

Habilitation is an operating permission, not independent accreditation of clinical outcomes. It does not verify a surgeon's registration or specialty. Use the Dominican Republic doctor-check page for that enquiry.

Follow How to check any mark in five minutes before relying on the clinic's credentials.
